Vamo lá?

Faz tempo que o Air não acerta com jeito. A dupla francesa que apareceu com o disco Moon Safari no final dos anos 90 não surgiu apenas como um contraponto leve aos beats e vocoders do Daft Punk, mas também como uma versão prog e ainda mais pop do perdido trip hop, que via seus principais autores (Massive Attack, Portishead, Tricky) distanciarem-se da sutileza de seus primeiros discos à medida em que a década terminava. Desde então, Jean-Benoit Dunckel e Nicolas Godin ajudaram o pop francês a se reerguer e a funcionar como ponte entre a geração trip hop e experimentalistas instrumentais da virada do século – nomes como Zero 7, Boards of Canada, Nouvelle Vague, Télépopmusik, The Knife, M83, Röyksopp e Cinematic Orchestra são apenas alguns artistas que tiveram suas carreiras facilitadas pelo fato do Air ter aberto um novo caminho no pop em 1998, trazendo para os anos 90 uma paisagem sonora onírica composta por diferentes usinas de som dos anos 70, como o progressivo pop do Pink Floyd, o jazz funk de Isaac Hayes e, claro, os cenários orquestrados das peças de Serge Gainsbourg (não à toa que capitanearam o disco de estreia da filha de Serge, Charlotte).

Air – “You Can Tell It to Everybody“

Se não voltarmos com atenção à Moon Safari, tem-se a impressão de que o disco emplacou apenas o hit “Sexy Boy”, mas ele já é maduro o suficiente para ser chamado de clássico – e faixas como “All I Need”, “Kelly Watch the Stars”, a belíssima introdução “La Femme D’Argent”, “Remember”, a doce “You Make It Easy” e a densa “Le Voyage de Pénélope” ajudam a dar a aura de obra-prima necessária ao disco.

Mas a partir dele, a carreira do Air torna-se errática. Embora sua presença midiática continue constante – em seus primeiros anos, a dupla lança um disco com as primeiras gravações (Premiers Symptomes), uma compilação de remixes (Everybody Hertz) e uma trilha sonora (do filme As Virgens Suicidas), antes de um segundo disco ainda mais setentista que o primeiro (10,000hz Legend). Mas desde 2002, os dois parecem ter se conformado em, em vez de mudar a paisagem sonora do planeta, cuidar apenas de sua pequena e particular biosfera sonora. Os discos seguintes – Talkie Walkie (de 2004) e Pocket Symphony (de 2007) – eram pequenos jardins ou hortas comparados à selva de seu primeiro disco. Em vez de nos perdermos no som, observávamos à distância, quase que com mais curiosidade do que prazer.

Air – “Night Hunter“

Love 2, seu novo disco, repara essa falha – e a solução apresentada vem em forma de melodia e, por que não, canções. Em vez de simplesmente propor um planos de cordas, pianos, beats e teclados elétricos, onde a ambientação sonora e os arranjos são postos à frente, a dupla prefere voltar ao ponto de partida do primeiro disco, em que pequenas canções iam, aos poucos, do ouvido para dentro da cabeça, crescendo e expandindo universos sem que o ouvinte sequer percebesse. Talvez isso – mais do que a quietude e doçura musical – fosse o principal responsável pelo clima de sonho da estréia da dupla.

Air – “Be a Bee“

E as canções voltam em Love 2 – sem a esquisitice de 10,000 Hz Legend ou a preguiça de Talkie-Walkie. Elas partem de pontos muito simples, como melodias tocadas em um instrumento (a escaleta de “Heaven’s Light”, a frase esticada pelo sintetizador em “Do the Joy”, o sax de “”), riffs de guitarra surf music (“Be a Bee” e “Eat My Beat”) ou de refrões quase infantiilizados (“Sing Sang Sung”, “You Can Tell It to Everybody”) para serem, aos poucos, acrescidas de camadas de instrumentação. Algumas canções refletem isso como fórmula e ecoam diretamente Moon Safari, como “So Light Is Her Footfall”. Contudo, certo clima sombrio contrapõe-se à luz enluarada deste disco, um pé na música africana filtrada pelo sotaque europeu que ganha ares de jazz – como “Love” (que pode soar quase como world music), “Night Hunter” e “African Velvet”, quando não assumem o ritmo como fio condutor (como “Be a Bee”, “Missing the Light of Day” e “Tropical Disease”) que praticamente revelam um novo Air, tenso, pouco amigável, mas igualmente encantador.

É no equilíbrio dessas duas metades que se equilibra Love 2 – de um lado, há o Air clássico, Gainsbourg instrumental, jazz funk para ninar; do outro, o Air da próxima década, mais pé no chão, menos classudo, mais incisivo, direto, reto. Contemplando a mudança de ares que vem por aí, a dupla é otimista – mas não perde o ceticismo.

A dupla carioca lança sua terceira mixtape (depois dos 30 Minutes of Twelves e do Episode II) e segue nos mesmos trilhos que a consagrou: o tom geral fica entre o synthpop e a nu-disco, mas com ouvidos atentos aos hits conhecidos pela maioria das pessoas. Assim, o set desce macio e suave, perfeito para esse frio súbito desse início de primavera. Vi lá no Bloody Pop.
