Então bora.

Apareceu do nada. Ontem à noite o Portishead foi ao programa do Zane Lowe na BBC e tirou da cartola essa improvável “Chase the Tear”, disponibilizada para download hoje de manhã no site da Anistia Internacional, que está vendendo o MP3 para arrecadar fundos. A nova canção é improvável por manter o mesmo clima de exploração de texturas do disco anterior, o cabeçudo Third, mas aproxima-se da melodia e do drama teatral característico do grupo de Bristol – e, mais do que isso, apontar para um possível quarto disco do grupo, para o ano que vem. E o flerte com o pop, quase ausente no hermetismo do último disco (“The Rip” era a exceção), fica evidente quando o instrumental ecoa, quase literalmente, a fase mais clássica do Cure. Fora que, em cima da hora, embaralhou a lista das melhores músicas do ano. Ao menos a minha. Afinal, 2009 só termina dia 31…

“Essa lição você tem que aprender: você só ganha o que você merece”, diz a voz em português no início do tão aguardado terceiro disco do Portishead, anunciando uma desoladora paisagem sonora: ribombo de percussão, cordas sintéticas, ruídos de guitarra – tudo cessa quando entra a voz de Beth Gibbons, dramática e chorosa. A atmosfera pós-punk, o ritmo tenso, a temperatura fria e a voz épica confirmam que estamos tanto em 2008 quanto no meio de um disco do Portishead. Mas onde estão as canções? Por mais que as texturas e camadas de som superpostas pela base instrumental da banda seja afiadíssima, a melodia se desfaz entre grunhidos elétricos, teclados “colocados”, ecos e efeitos barulhentos. Fora a belíssima “The Rip” (que lá pela metade perde toda sua beleza rumo a um arranjo minimalista e industrial sem vontade), todo o resto do disco subiria algumas posições caso fosse uma digressão instrumental, uma sinfonia de ambiências que teria parentesco tanto na música eletrônica erudita quanto no hip hop sem MC ou no pop com aspirações à seriedade. Mas sem a voz da banda para defender dramas e tragédias como se chorar fosse sinônimo de cantar e canções estruturadas tradicionalmente (estrofe, refrão, estrofe, etc.), o novo do Portishead soa como um tiro no escuro: plasticamente é lindo, mas tanto quem atira quanto quem ouviu o disparo não conseguem saber se algo foi atingido.
