Não resisti e resgatei umas edições velhas do Trabalho Sujo impresso, tirei umas fotos e redimensionei pra colocar aqui no site. As fotos estão com cores diferentes não por conta da idade do papel, mas porque parte delas eu fiz de dia (as mais brancas) e a outra de noite (as amareladas). Dá uma sacada como era…

Nesta edição, dois segundos discos: o do Planet Hemp e o do Supergrass.

Nesta eu falei do Panthalassa, disco de remix que o Bill Laswell fez com a obra de Miles Davis, o segundo disco do Garbage, entrevista com Virgulóides, disco de caridade organizado pelo Neil Young e uma explicação sobre um novo gênero chamado… big beat.

Entrevistei os três integrantes do Fellini (Jair, Thomas e Cadão) para contar a história da banda, numa época em que eles nem pensavam em voltar de verdade (depois disso, eles já voltaram e terminaram a bandas umas três vezes). Também tem a história do Black Sabbath, uma entrevista que eu fiz com o Afrika Bambaataa e o comentário sobre a demo de uma banda nova que tinha surgido no Rio, chamada Autoramas.

…e na cobertura dos shows do Superchunk eu ainda consegui que a banda segurasse o nome do Trabalho Sujo para servir de logo na página.

Editei o Sujo impresso entre 1995 e 2000. Durante esse período, ele teve vários formatos. Começou como uma coluna na contracapa do caderno de cultura de segunda e em 1996 virou uma coluna bissemanal ocupando 1/6 da página 2 do mesmo caderno. No mesmo ano, voltou a ter uma página inteira, nas edições de sábado e entre 1997 e 1999 ocupou a central do caderno de domingo. Neste último ano, voltou a ter apenas uma página, nas edições de sábado. Na época em que eu fazia o Sujo impresso, eu era editor de arte do Diário do Povo e, por este motivo, participei da criação do site do jornal em 1996 – e garanti que o Sujo tivesse uma versão online desde seu segundo ano. Foi o suficiente para que ele começasse a ser lido fora de Campinas (onde já tinha um pequeno séquito de leitores, que compravam o Diário apenas para ler a coluna) e ganhasse algum princípio de moral online, que carrego até hoje.

Na época, eu dividia o gostinho de fazer a coluna com dois outros compadres – o Serjão, que era editor de fotografia do jornal e que hoje está no Agora SP, e o Roni, um dos melhores ilustradores que conheço. Os dois são amigos com quem lamento não manter contato firme, mas são daquelas pessoas que, se encontro amanhã, parece que não vi desde ontem. Juntos, éramos uma minirredação dentro da redação – tínhamos reunião de pauta, discussões sobre o layout da página e trocávamos comentários sobre os discos que eu trazia para resenhar. No fim, eu fazia tudo sozinho na página (como faço até hoje), da decisão sobre o que entra ao texto, passando pela diagramação. Sérgio e Roni entravam com fotos e ilustras, mas, principalmente, com o feedback pra eu saber se não estava viajando demais ou de menos. Nós também começamos a discotecar juntos, mais um quarto compadre, o William, e, em 97, inauguramos o Quarteto Funkástico apenas para tocar black music e groovezeiras ilimitadas, em CD ou em vinil. Não era só eu quem escrevia no Sujo (eu sempre convidava conhecidos, amigos e alguns figurões), mas Roni e Serjão, por menos que tenham escrito, fizeram muito mais parte dessa história do que qualquer um que tenha escrito algo com mais de cinco palavras.

No ano 2000 eu fui chamado pelo editor-chefe do jornal concorrente, o Correio Popular, maior jornal de Campinas, para editar seu caderno de cultura, o Caderno C, cargo que ocupei durante um ano, antes de me mudar para São Paulo. Neste ano, para evitar confusões entre os dois jornais sobre quem era o dono da coluna (e não correr o risco de assistir a alguém depredar o nome que criei no jornal que comecei a trabalhar), decidi tirar o Sujo do papel e deixá-lo apenas online. Criei minha página no Geocities para despejar os textos que publicava em outra coluna dominical, no novo jornal, chamada Termômetro. Mas, online, seguia o Trabalho Sujo -até que, do Geocities fui para o Gardenal, e isso é ooooutra história.

Um dia eu organizo tudo bonitinho, isso é só pra fazer uma graça – e matar a minha saudade.

Por que você não faz shows?
São muitos motivos para serem listados. Não é digno, pra mim. Eu acho que os discos bastam. Turnês interromperiam o ritmo da minha vida. É como uma infância suspensa. Estou tentando viver como um adulto. Não nasci para estar sob os holofotes, num palco. Eu sou o observador, não o observado. É que parece errado para a minha natureza.

Sim, ele cancelou a turnê pela América do Sul que estava sendo ameaçada desde o início do segundo semestre do ano passado – e que passaria pelo Brasil. E, dois dias depois, outra mensagem de Berman falava dos motivos – resolver os problemas com o pai. Mas antes que você acha que lá vem outro chorão reclamar de “daddy issues”, saiba que as dele não são nada agradáveis. O senhor Richard Berman é referido pela mídia americana como “Dr. Evil“, por fazer lobby em defesa de produtos caros ao nosso dia-a-dia como o café, a fast food, o sal e o óleo nem que isso signifique defender apenas seus produtores e mandar a saúde de seus consumidores pro lixo, além de ter como inimigos ativistas pelos direitos dos animais, sindicatos e até mesmo um grupo de mães que é faz campanha contra beber e dirigir. E assim vinha a segunda nota:

My life is so wierd. It’s allegorical to the nth. My father went to college at Transylvania University.

A couple of years ago I demanded he stop his work. Close down his company or I would sever our relationship.

He refused. He has just gotten worse. More evil. More powerful. We’ve been “estranged” for over three years.

Even as a child I disliked him. We were opposites. I wanted to read. He wanted to play games.

He is a union buster.

When I got out of college I joined the Teamsters (the guards were union organized at the Whitney).

I went off to hide in art and academia.

I fled through this art portal for twenty years. In the mean time my Dad started a very very bad company called Berman and Company.

He props up fast food/soda/factory farming/childhood obesity and diabetes/drunk driving/secondhand smoke.

He attacks animal lovers, ecologists, civil action attorneys, scientists, dieticians, doctors, teachers.

His clients include everyone from the makers of Agent Orange to the Tanning Salon Owners of America.

He helped ensure the minimum wage did not move a penny from 1997-2007!

The worst part for me as a writer is what he does with the english language.

Though vicious he is a doltish thinker and his spurious editorials rely on doublethink and always with the Lashon Hara.

As I studied Judaism over the years, the shame and the shanda, grew almost too much. my heart was constantly on fire for justice. I could find no relief.

This winter I decided that the SJs were too small of a force to ever come close to undoing a millionth of all the harm he has caused. To you and everyone you know.

Literally, if you eat food or have a job, he is reaching you.

I’ve always hid this terrible shame from you, the fan. The SJs have always stood autonomous and clear.

Hopefully it won’t contaminate your feelings about the work.

My life has been riddled with Ibsenism. In a way I am the son of a demon come to make good the damage.

Previously I thought, through songs and poems and drawings I could find and build a refuge away from his world.

But there is the matter of Justice.

And i’ll tell you it’s not just a metaphor. The desire for it actually burns.

It hurts.

There needs to be something more. I’ll see what that might be.

Na onda, o Eduardo Vasconcellos, do Last Splash, fala um pouco mais sobre o fim da banda antes de começar uma retrospectiva uploadando os álbuns dos SJ – incluindo o meu clássico pessoal, American Water, linkando para a resenha e a entrevista que fiz com o Berman na época. Ele também linka a entrevista que o português João Lisboa (ri não!) fez com Berman em 2007, em que ele já fala do drama com seu pai.

Fico imaginando se a moda pega… Se cada filho de advogado que defende causas inomináveis ou parlamentar acusado de corrupção ou qualquer outro soldado da máquina de maldade que coexiste com o capitalismo global fizesse uma campanha para difamar o próprio pai… Taí uma forma de protesto impossível de conceber no século passado – e que pode se tornar uma nova fórmula.

Tá explicado porque o Vida Fodona da semana passada não saiu na quarta-feira: na linha do #110, em que dei uma geral no primeiro semestre de 2008, esse #135 faz a rapa na produção e lançamentos da segunda metade do ano (tem coisa lançada no primeiro semestre, mas que só fui ouvir depois). E sem apresentação, falatório ou comentários sobre as faixas – agora é só música. Vai fundo:
