Iggy & The Stooges “Raw Power” is still my favorite classic record these days. I had been aware of Stooges music after first seeing pictures of Iggy painted silver and walking on the hands of the audience, chipped teeth and snarling. It was obviously taking what I was liking about rock freakishness and putting it into real action. The drama of Bowie and glam seemed all at once tame after seeing this image. I searched out the LPs I could find which were the first two and they were certainly monolithic and numbing. Especially in context of what was happening in the rock scene at that time - be it Emerson , Lake and Palmer or Helen Reddy. Only Alice Cooper seemed relative but even that group had a safety net of theatre that the Stooges seemed to incinerate with sheer wickedness. I had heard that a new Stooges record was to be released and that Bowie produced it and Iggy had changed his last name to “Popp” and this was all too exciting. Of course I had absolutely no one to share this excitement with. I happened upon Raw Power after seeing it in the department store I would go to to look at records. Buying records was a privelege as they cost money and as a young teenager in the early 70s money wasn’t exactly plentiful. But I did buy Raw Power. I knew I had to. The cover with Iggy bare chested, in silver lamé trousers staring off into some rock n roll psycho void had me in a heartbeat. And the back cover with the various photos of the band in glam anxious repose were all the invitation I need to the future. To top it all off there were the electric song titles. ‘Search and Destroy’, ‘Gimme Danger’, ‘Penetration”. ‘Shake Appeal’, ‘You’re Pretty Face Is Going To Hell’. On the shrink wrap was a sticker that had the LP title on it in dripping Munsters lettering. It was all too much. And the record from beginning to end was a masterpiece. It took the howling thud of the first two LPs and zapped it with some new found fire. The lead guitarist was James Williamson, not on the previous LPs, and his licks were so sizzling and treble piercing that I thought they would sonically slice my soul open. The lyrics “look out honey cuz I’m using technology…” in one snarl decimated everything around them. A lot of it was due to the delivery of Iggy’s vocal - it was as if the flaming voice of rock n roll had found it’s Rosemary’s Baby to deliver us from nowheresville. And by God, it did.

É isso aí: Thurston tá blogando. Já falou de disco solo novo, jogou umas fotos velhas, comentou de uma colaboração com a Yoko e desenterrou uns poemas que fez quando era adolescente. Pouca coisa - o maior post é este comentário sobre o Raw Power, dos Stooges, que eu colei aí em cima. Quero ver colocar músicas próprias pra download - ou abrir o processo de gravação do disco novo, sei lá.

Chuva elétrica

Era o Sonic Youth sendo o Sonic Youth

Duas coisas me fizeram escolher assistir ao Planeta Terra em vez de ir ao Maquinária - a primeira, crucial, foi a localização de ambos. Enquanto o festival do portal de internet acontecia num inusitado Playcenter, o outro ocorria na mesma Chácara do Jóquei que viu o fiasco de organização que foi o show do Radiohead em São Paulo. Só a lembrança da zona que foi este lugar no início do ano já me faz ter bode de qualquer evento que se disponha a montar sua tenda por lá. O segundo motivo foi a confirmação do show do Sonic Youth. Embora muita gente estivesse esperando bandas mais novas ou inéditas no Brasil, fiz parte de turma que sorriu quando anunciaram que Thurston, Kim, Lee e Steve voltariam a tocar por aqui. Sou fã dos quatro, fazer o quê - suportei até a última apresentação de Merce Cunningham em vida só pelo fato de saber que o Sonic Youth era a banda que faria o som da apresentação de dança. Faith No More, Jane’s Addiction, Primal Scream, Iggy Pop… As duas primeiras bandas ficaram presas num passado que não faço questão de revisitar, quando, no início dos anos 90, o heavy metal se descobriu tão esquizofrênico quanto os desenhos animados de Chuck Jones (o Jane’s Addiction tem uma pegada menos palhaça que a banda de Mike Patton, mas esse L.A. blues soa melhor quando o Farrell monta o Porno for Pyros - e todo mundo sabe que o melhor momento do Dave Navarro em disco é no One Hot Minute, do Red Hot). O Primal Scream já tinha passado por aqui em 2004 (foi isso? Ou foi 2005? Preguiça de olhar no Google) e eu já tive o meu momento com o Iggy Pop.

Por isso, o festival dos festivais que ocorreu no fim de semana, para mim, se resumia a assistir ao show do Sonic Youth. Cheguei no Terra um pouco antes do Primal Scream entrar no palco, mas nem precisava ir tão cedo (embora o evento já estivesse cheio de gente desde as 5 da tarde, segundo relatos, devido aos brinquedos do parque), porque o show foi bem ruim. Não por culpa da banda, visivelmente aborrecida com uma série de problemas - a ausência de luz no palco nas primeiras músicas, a ausência do som de uma das guitarras, “XTRMNTR” teve de ser recomeçada duas vezes. Quem estava mais perto do palco viu o vocalista Bobby Gillespie de cara fechada, nada satisfeito com o show, que até teve seus bons momentos - como uma versão krautrock para “Shoot Speed Kill Light” e a seqüência final do show que começou com “Moving on Up”.

Mas foi no Sonic Youth que as coisas engrenaram. No show que o grupo fez no Claro que é Rock (2006?) muitos reclamaram da ausência de hits e do som baixo. Sobre os hits, não reclamo - gosto da banda mesmo quando ela toca só músicas do disco novo. O som parece que estava baixo, mas eu não percebi porque me enfiei no meio do público e cheguei pertinho do palco. Para não correr o risco de pegar um show baixo, repeti a tática - e, depois do show, descobri que nem era preciso, pois o som tinha sido o melhor no palco principal do evento.

E veio a chuva. Constante sem ser pesada, ela atravessou todo o show do Sonic Youth como uma espécie de textura para a noite. E mesmo com a banda se recusando a voltar a seus hits dos anos 90, o público não largou do pé do palco e se deixou levar pelo transe da eletricidade que, por vezes, vinha de três guitarras - o baixista do Pavement, Mark Ibold, revezava-se entre o baixo e a guitarra no papel de quinto integrante da banda, talvez mais feliz do que todo o público por estar tocando ao lado de seus ídolos (o sorriso vinha ao rosto do cara durante várias músicas).

As únicas exceções que fizeram ao passado levaram o público ao meio dos anos 80, com três faixas do Daydream Nation (”The Sprawl”, “‘Cross the Breeze” e “Hey Joni”), uma do Sister (”Stereo Sanctity”) e “Death Valley 69″. E aí estava o principal trunfo do show deste ano - sem apelar para as músicas mais conhecidas, eles envolveram o público com riffs, dedilhados, palhetadas, acordes tortos e microfonia, tirando-o das referências fáceis de um show de rock, como solo, refrão e letra fácil de ser lembrada, e levando-o para seu próprio universo onde som, ruído, música e canção são indistintos entre si, partes de um mesmo processo. Neste contexto, pouco importou o fato das músicas do novo disco, The Eternal, serem conhecidas ou não. Era o Sonic Youth sendo o Sonic Youth - e não apenas um show de rock.

Perdi quase todos os outros shows (lamento mesmo não ter visto o Metronomy, a melhor atração nova da noite, na minha opinião), mas ainda consegui ver o Iggy Pop se esgoelando como um zumbi que teima em não morrer (e isso é um elogio, como foi bom ouvir “Search & Destroy” ao vivo) e dar uma passada no Ting Tings a ponto de vê-los tocar “Great DJ”. E perceber que o Playcenter, por mais inusitado que podia parecer, não só funcionou e bem para um festival desse porte como contagiou parte do público com a alegria infantil de voltar a um parque de diversões. Tomara que o do ano que vem continue lá - além de o fato de chegar em casa em menos de meia hora depois de sair do show contar pontos extra para o evento.

Planeta Terra x Maquinária

E aí, já definiu pra qual dos dois festivais você vai? Planeta Terra ou Maquinária?

Eu já: vou pro Planeta Terra. Primeiro porque o festival vem provando há duas edições que dá pra fazer um festival decente, cobrando um único preço razoável para assistir a várias atrações na mesma e única noite. Segundo porque estou curioso pra saber como fazer funcionar um festival no Playcenter às vésperas do renascimento da Barra Funda. O bairro está passando por uma evolução imobiliária de larga escala e é questão de anos para vermos aquela região dos galpões transformar-se em um dos melhores lugares de São Paulo. E terceiro porque mesmo sem fechar as atrações principais (por enquanto, além do Maximo Park, do Metronomy e do Primal Scream, a especulação caía sobre a possibilidade de trazer Neil Young - imagina… -, Snow Patrol ou Sonic Youth - e acho que essa última leva), o festival ainda me parece mais interessante do que o Maquinária.

Esse, por sua vez, me parece acumular defeitos - quase todos vindo pela via pessoal. Não estou entre as viúvas do Faith No More, muito menos das do Jane’s Addiction, dois shows facilmente perdíveis (embora esteja cogitando pegar o FNM em outra praça), mas um festival que inclui estas duas bandas e ainda adiciona o Evanescence à mistura me parece o oposto de uma boa noite. Junte isso ao fato do evento acontecer na mesma Chácara do Jóquei que viu o fiasco de produção pós-show do Radiohead esse ano e já tenho ingredientes para deixá-lo fora da minha mira.

Há quem diga que um dos festivais vai dar com os burros n’água. Exagero. São Paulo é uma cidade grande o suficiente para comportar dois - ou mais - eventos de tais proporções no mesmo dia. Fora que eu acho que, além de não competir diretamente, os dois festivais ajudam a fazer uma separação que não diz respeito especificamente a gênero musical ou a faixa etária, mas a uma combinação dos dois misturada com o momento atual do pop no Brasil.

Não são dois festivais de música pop e pronto. Um soa mais pesado e tem apelo mais juvenil, o outro soa mais indie e tem um enfoque um pouco mais adulto. O problema é que, no Brasil, não existe a possibilidade de se encarar música pop e idade adulta ao mesmo tempo. Aqui ou você gosta da Alta Cultura ou é apenas um moleque. É uma piada de mau gosto que faz com que aconteça alguns absurdos que já nos acostumamos: a ausência de uma revista de música num país essencialmente musical, a insistência de artistas juvenis de outrora em continuar insistindo no mesmo hit do passado, a existência da MPB como gênero musical (e chancela instantânea de bom gosto), o melhor da cultura brasileira dos últimos 30, 40 anos sendo tratado como descartável e passageiro, até ser descoberto por algum gringo desavisado.

Un poco más de Nueva York

Olha a música com que a Lily Allen fechou seu último show da turnê deste ano nos EUA:

E a menina é uma popstar nata: além de boa compositora pop fica o tempo todo fazendo brincadeiras com o público, falando besteira sem se preocupar com pose, fumando cigarros e bebendo vinho, enquanto escancara suas relações pessoais em canções. Seus dois primeiros discos são mais importantes do que os últimos quinze anos da carreira de Madonna e ela prova isso no palco.

Tem mais vídeos lá na TV Trabalho Sujo, pra quem estiver a fim de ver.

Já o Sonic Youth com o John Paul Jones e Takehisa Kosugi fazendo barulho como trilha sonora para a apresentação de noventa anos da sumidade da dança moderna Merce Cunningham eu não pude filmar (afinal, foi no Opera Hall do BAM e o público era tão metido a sisudo quanto o lugar). Mas, tudo bem - você não perdeu muita coisa - essa menina, filmou o que ela conseguiu, sente o drama. O espetáculo de dança em si só serviu para eu ter certeza de que dança contemporânea não é a minha praia mesmo - embora o bom e velho SY tenha feito o ruído necessário para valer o preço do espetáculo. A Kim até cantou…

Agradecendo o público: os bailarinos, o coreógrafo (na cadeira de rodas), o Sonic Youth (vestidos que nem gente), Kosugi (à esquerda, de suspensórios) e John Paul Jones (à direita, de suspensórios)

Enquanto não volto à ativa (4 de maio, hein…), fiquem com a cobertura que o Bruno está fazendo do Coachella, com os cartuns que o Arnaldo fez pro G1 e que pouca gente viu e com a carta que o Mini escreveu para os anos 90. E você já baixou o disco do Dodô? Que achou, hein?
