Waits começou a participar do programa enviando fitas sobre temas aleatórios, até que a produção passou a antecipar os temas do programa para que ele lhes enviasse mais fitas com suas palavras de sabedoria. Bob Dylan e Tom Waits

Esses curtas que o Seth McFarlaine tem feito são muito melhores que suas séries habituais (American Dad ou Family Guy), porque eles vão no ponto em que ele esmerilha: cenas isoladas de qualquer contexto que mostrem o absurdo e o nonsense que é isso que nós chamamos de realidade. Tem um monte no user de YouTube dele.

N.A.S.A. – The Spirit of Apollo

Zé Gonzalez já vive a ponte aérea entre a América do Sul e a América do Norte há mais de dez anos, mas só agora efetiva seu primeiro lançamento intercontinental, chamando o produtor Sam Spiegel, irmão de Spike Jonze, que também assina como Squeak E. Clean, para lançar o projeto N.A.S.A. Mas o primeiro disco da dupla, The Spirit of Apollo, sofre da síndrome da festa V.I.P., em que o número de celebridades parece exceder o próprio conhecimento dos convivas. Pra que tanto convidado assim? Contando apenas os facilmente reconhecíveis, temos uma lista que inclui Seu Jorge, quase todo Wu-Tang Clan, Santogold, Lovefoxxx, George Clinton, Del Tha Funkee Homosapien, Tom Waits, John Frusciante, David Byrne, Chuck D, Spank Rock, M.I.A., Kanye West, Sizzla, KRS-One e a Karen O do Yeah Yeah Yeahs, fora outra lista com nomes que inclui boa parte do escalão do hip hop americano atual. E o que esse povo todo acrescenta ao disco? Ou são samples humanos? Sendo assim, esse monte de artista acaba travando as possibilidades em vez de amplia-las, comprometendo o fluxo do disco com obviedades e pura encheção de lingüiça.

Mesmo com suíngue calibrado, o refrão de “Money” (“money is the root of all evil”) não consegue ser mais clichê, enquanto “Way Down”, com John Frusciante, soa como genérico de trip hop. A dobradinha Tom Waits/Kool Keith em “Spacious Thoughts” é totalmente dispensável e até a participação de George Clinton é trivial. Ainda mais quando se compara esse lado de The Spirit of Apollo com o em que ele acerta. São poucos hits, mas que, quando batem, pegam muito bem. A primeira faixa a ser revelada, “Gifted” (que reúne Santogold, Lykke Li e Kanye West) continua sendo a faixa mais bem resolvida do disco, que ainda tem outros bons momentos. “Watchadoin?”, que junta M.I.A., Santogold e Spank Rock (este último põe quase tudo a perder, soando tão vazio quanto a Fergie), cogita a possibilidade do Clash ter descoberto o funk carioca na época de Sandinista!, “Strange Enough” transforma Karen O num Mick Jagger (mas precisava do Ol’ Dirty Bastard e do Fatlip? Não precisava) e “A Volta” mostra que Lovefoxxx funciona até no ragga.

E quando sai do mundo de celebridades pop, a música do N.A.S.A. torna-se verdadeiramente inspirada, talvez por serem justamente quando Zé se sente mais em casa – seja ao lado do Babão dos Inumanos, quando deixam o samba comer bonito na vitrola em “O Pato”, que no caso, não é o de João Gilberto, mas o Donald, e em alguns momentos isolados (“N.A.S.A. Music” seria tão melhor se fosse instrumental ou a aparição de Miguel de Deus e da metaleira de Lincoln Olivetti no meio de “The Mayor”). Talvez a solução fosse deixar Zé Gonzalez ter mais peso no disco e na dupla – boa parte dos convidados apareceram graças aos contatos de Sam no meio publicitário, onde também bate cartão. Mas só o fato do fato da dupla chamar-se N.A.S.A. (que, apesar de vir da junção de North America com South America, ainda é a agência espacial estadunidense) diz muito sobre o resultado. Quem sabe, Zé está só esperando o momento certo para seu próprio disco.
